Shape shifting

I never really thought about what I would look like after losing 50 pounds. Ok, that's not 100% truthful, there were times over the years when I thought about looking like Gweneth Paltrow ... but that will take way more than losing 50 pounds. I think I'll have to grow at least 5 inches ...

Anyway, I never seriously thought about what I would look like after losing so much weight. I was too busy actually losing the weight to give it much thought. But as I stand upon the precipice of actually claiming that 50-pound loss, I can't help but marvel at the changes in my body shape, both the good and the not-so-different.

Before I start nit-picking, I need to say that I am very happy with the overall changes in my body. I am just surprised by the things that have taken longer to change - and the things that have changed drastically.

1. My boobs are gone - and I miss them. Honestly, I woke up one day and they had pulled an Elvis (left the building). They weren't the first to go (if one more person says "Well, they are always the first to go," I'll scream), they pulled their disappearing act this summer. I went from a 40 DDD (yes, triple D) down to a 34/36 C.

I used to dream of being a 34 C, but that old adage about being careful what you wish for is true. When I was bigger, I thought my breasts were my best feature. Boys loved them and they were the one claim to "sexy" that I had. Now that they are gone, I'm honestly having some identity issues.

2. My arms are getting into great shape. Either there was a lot of muscle hiding in my arm fat or my puny 10 pound curls each week are really paying off! I don't know much about how a woman's arms should measure using a tape measure, but it never occurred to me that losing 4.5 inches in each arm would make such a difference. It sounds like such a small number.

3. My abs are taking forever to form! Sure, I've lost 12 inches from my stomach, but there is still quite a it of work needed down there. I have at least one more inch of pure fat sitting on my abs and it drives me crazy.

I never had an overly large stomach. It was always proportionate to my body. In fact, I would go so far as to describe it as "flat-ish." I mean, it was a flat for a girl who had a 40-inch waist, if that makes sense. But it was smaller than my boobs and my butt, so I wasn't self conscious about it.

I have this silly dream of getting my bellybutton pierced  as my big reward for getting healthy. I know it's silly, juvenile, immature, out of style even ... but it really means a lot to me. Growing up, belly piercings were all the rage with the pretty, skinny girls in high school. All of the cheerleaders had a little jewel peaking out from their cropped tops and I was sooooo jealous! So, for me and me alone, I plan to pierce my bellybutton. It's my way of acknowledging how far I've come.

4. What the heck, butt? I always knew I carried a lot of junk in my trunk, but I thought it would empty as my stomach got smaller. I've lost 10 inches from my butt/hips and while that's awesome and makes me very proud, I still have quite a rump going on!

I used to pride myself in my hour-glass-ish figure. Big butt, big boobs, smaller stomach - everything was proportionate. But now, it's big butt, small boobs and smaller waist. I'm bottom-heavy for the first time ever and not pleased.

Lately, I've been targeting my butt and thighs in my workouts. I call myself a "body sculptor" - but I get the feeling I'm going to need a bigger chisel to get this booty into shape.

5. Stupid calves. I've been saying it from the beginning: I hate my calves. They have always been huge and they are still huge and I hate, hate, hate them. The fact that I have lost 2.25 inches from them is good, but not good enough. I don't know what they should measure, but I am tired of shopping for boots and finding it impossible to pull them up over my gargantuan calves!

Looking at a recent "article" from a Women's Health email, "Shop your shape," I noticed my body has changed from "curvy" to "pear" or (dare I say it?) "athletic." But I'm not athletic - am I? As much grief as I just gave my booty, it's not that much bigger than my chest - at least I don't think I look like the drawing above. But I find it really difficult to describe myself as "athletic." That means a lot more has changed than just my body shape. And maybe it has ... but, I still feel like the girl I was for 26 years - the one who avoided horizontals, bright colors and corduroy. But am I still that girl? When my mind catches up to my body in changes, I'll let you know.

Numbers never lie

Yesterday was my monthly measurement day and I had pretty high hopes. I recently bought a pair of size 8 pants! And they are too big in the waist now.
Sadly, the numbers didn't seem to show that. If there is one thing I've learned by watching The Biggest Loser, however, it's that it is harder to lose weight as you get smaller. You burn less calories when you weigh less - so to lose weight you have to work that much more. Which is kind of funny: Your reward for losing weight is the need to work harder to keep losing weight.

So is that why am I losing these last 5 pounds so darn slowly? Nope. I can't exactly blame the not losing weight on my weight loss (did you follow that reasoning?). In my situation, it's the fact that I'm not as vigilant these days in my calorie-counting. And that's all there is to it.

Thanks to Sparkpeople, I can look back at my calorie expenditures during the last few months.

Do you see the trend? September and October have been all over the board.  Why? Because I gave myself permission to relax. At first I was going to write about this as a bad thing, but after thinking about it all day, I've changed my mind. I'm not quite sure what to think of this. I'm still losing weight - just not exactly at a pound a week.

I love the freedom of eating a piece of pizza (just one is plenty!) when I'm just too tired to cook fresh vegetables or forgot to thaw that day's meat. I love sharing some fries with Kevin when we go to a bar to watch the Cowboys play. I never wanted to be that snobby eater who turns her nose up at normal America life - as long as I balance it. One piece of pizza is about 250 calories - and it's plenty filling with a salad and glass of milk. Heck, even fries aren't evil so long as they don't accompany a big, greasy cheeseburger once a week.

That's the point, right? This journey hasn't been about deprivation and complete denial. It's been about learning to eat foods in reasonable quantities and balance the good with the bad so that I can live a healthy, happy life.

But here's the question: Am I ready? Numbers never lie ...

Today I am thrilled to look at my measurements! The past month has been pretty good to my goal of getting smaller. Yay!!!

Too much of a good thing?

I lost 4 pounds this week. And I'm not entirely happy about it.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm happy to read 150.6 on the scale, but that's twice the amount I should have lost! Will is stay off? That is tbd.

This could be my body finally recovering from the 3-Day. Or the fact that I lowered my calorie allowance by 100 this past week (I went from 1300 a day to 1200 a day).

Since I'm not burning thousands of calories on training walks now, I posed that "Are you going to eat less or work out more" question to myself and decided on "eat less."

This could also be one of those weeks when I have a big loss before biology attacks me and I gain or don't lose because I'm a woman. (I can talk in euphemism!)

I'll take the number of course - happily. I would just wish I could feel like it was more permanent. So much of a good thing rarely is, after all.

But maybe it will be! That would be AWESOME!

My Measurements:
Waist: 29 ... overall decrease of 11 inches :-D
Hips: 39 ... overall decrease of 7.5
Thigh: 21 ... overall decrease of 7.5 - no change, though, from last month
Calves: 15 ... overall decrease of 2.25 inches, no change from last month
Upper Arm: 12 ... overall decrease of 3.5 inches
Sadly, didn't have time to test my push ups or crunches this morning.

Miles to go

I have run smack-dab into a weight loss wall and don't quite know how to get around it. Yes, Ladies (and Gentleman), I have hit that dreaded plateau.

I weighed in at 157 again. Sure, back when I weighed in at 162 two weeks in a row, I had a false alarm. But the past four weeks have seen me at 156, 159, 157, and 157.

Talking with Lindsy about the plateau this morning, she asked a simple question.

"So, what are you going to do - exercise more or eat less?"

And it really is that simple. I love it.

Goal Weight Day is in 6 weeks and I need to lose 12 pounds (still!) to make Goal Weight. Of course, that means 2 pounds a week, but I've decided not to make any specific changes until after the 3-Day.

By default, I suppose that means I'm going to "exercise more" since my 3-Day training has me walking 18 miles this Saturday and 15 miles this Sunday. Plus it has me walking 60 miles over three days in a little more than two weeks. Right now, I feel the need to focus all of my energy on getting ready for the 3-Day. I'll eat healthy and follow my training regimen and reassess once the walk is over.

On a positive note, my monthly measurements provided some joy this morning. My waist is in the 20s and my hips in the 30s!!! My thighs and arms didn't change in numbers, but the definition is noticeably more pronounced in both areas. Also, my calves are (annoyingly) slowly getting smaller.

Sure, my weight itself may be frustrating me right now, but I have never felt so healthy! That's where the real success lies.

This past Sunday Kevin agreed to sub on a mens softball team and I went to cheer him on. I was approached by a stranger from a different league who needed another girl so they could play. A couple of years ago I would have declined, but instead I jumped up and joined the Pile of Hits.

During the next two hours, I squatted as catcher (and still feel the pain!), hit the ball two out of three at-bats (got walked on the 4th) and narrowly missed getting on base by milliseconds. Last year, I missed getting on base by full seconds - my hits are going farther and I'm running faster, now. Also, I have a new idea about my abilities and I love it!

It would be easy to stop now. To congratulate myself on losing 40 pounds (or so), getting in better shape and bragging about my status as a long-distance walker. I don't even think there would be too much shame in it. I've come a long way, baby. But I promised to lose 50 pounds in 50 weeks and I'm not going to walk away from that goal. So sure, I've come a long way - but I still have miles to go (12 to be exact) before I get there.

My Measurements:
Waist: 29.5 ... overall decrease of 10.5 inches (WOOHOO!!!)
Hips: 39.75 ... overall decrease of 7.5
Thigh: 21 ... overall decrease of 7.5 - no change, though, from last month
Calves: 15 ... overall decrease of 2.25 inches (slowly, but surely, right?)
Upper Arm: 12.5 ... overall decrease of 3 inches - no change from last month
Push ups: 20 (Though Kevin says they don't count since I didn't go down "far enough" hmph)
Sit ups: 27 (I did full sit-ups rather than crunches this morning)

Have I hit the dreaded Plateau?

I read a lot about weight loss and the things people experience when they are working on losing a large amount (more than 20 pounds).

One thing most people experience is The Plateau: They just stop losing weight. No gaining occurs, but nothing is lost either. For some it lasts weeks, others months. The body gets used to the calories you're feeding it and your workouts become routine to your system. The body, essentially, tells the future and adjusts itself perfectly to what you feed it and how much you work it. The body wants to maintain and that's good - when maintenance is your goal. But I'm not there yet!

I hoped to avoid the plateau by shaking things up on a regular basis. First, it was just tracking the diet. Then, I slowly added (what I now consider) short treadmill jaunts. And lately I've added long distance walking.

But, after two weeks of weighing in at 162, I'm afraid I may have hit it. I may be stressing before a pattern hits (three weeks would really show one!), but I have 11 weeks to lose 17 pounds and I can't afford any time lost!

There could be other explanations: 1) muscle gain - things are looking a lot more defined these days 2) water-weight - I drink more than 70 ounces a day generally.

Bit if this truly is the markings of The Plateau, I need to figure out a way to solve it - fast! Usually, to get out of the plateau you have to shake your body up a lot. Shock the system, so to speak. I thought walking double-digit miles would be enough to combat that!

Any ideas?

My Measurements
Waist: 30.5 ... overall decrease of 9.5 inches (can't wait to get into the 20s!!!)
Hips: 40 ... overall decrease of 7.25
Thigh: 21 ... overall decrease of 7.5 inches
Calves: 15.25 ... overall decrease of 2 inches (There is a lot more definition now!)
Upper Arm: 12.5 ... overall decrease of 3 inches

Last Month:
Waist: 31.25
Hips: 40.5
Thigh: 21.25
Calf: 15.25
Upper Arm: 12.75

Starting Points:
Weight: 195 lbs
Waist: 40 inches

Calf: 17.25 inches

Monthly Measurements

My Measurements:
Waist: 31.25 ... overall decrease of 8.75 inches (could be better from last month!)
Hips: 40.5 ... overall decrease of 6.75
Thigh: 21.25 ... overall decrease of 7.25 inches
Calf: 15.25 ... overall decrease of 2 inches (You can get calf reductions, right?)
Upper Arm: 12.75 ... overall decrease of 2.25 inches

I wish there was more loss in my waist - I was really hoping to say I've lost ten inches in my waist, but that's ok. There was a lot of loss in my hips; Not ten inches, but 2.5 inches in the past month. Score! Looks like my squats are working! The same for my arm curls. The numbers may not show a big loss, but the definition in my arms sure does.

And this is why I measure ... because my weight today showed a pound gained back (166), but my measurements showed progress for the past month. Normally, I would be bummed by the weight gain, but thanks to my progress in inches, it's not so bad.

Plus, I weighed myself mid-week, after I returned from Texas and it wasn't pretty at all. I gained 4 pounds while back home! I didn't like seeing 169 on the scale so I've been watching every single calorie and walking or moving whenever possible since Sunday. I was honestly relieved to see the scale say 166 this morning.

I'm hoping for 2 pounds next week to get me back on track. Actually, I'm hoping for two pounds a week for a few weeks - to get me officially on track. I have 15 weeks to lose 21 pounds. That means I need to be very vigilant over the next four months, no more diet vacations (luckily, there are no trips to Texas in the plans), and get back into the gym.

Speaking of the gym, I received a coupon in my ValPak that Gold's Gym is offering women a free membership for a month. I might just partake - for the month, in order to have a gym close to home. The offer expires at the end of May. If you're interested, I think it's a national promotion. Call your local Gold's and see!

Weigh/Measurement Day.

So the last 7 weeks I've been in medical limbo. Several tests and procedures later I am happy to announce that I don't have cancer. My last biopsy stated that I was the stage directly prior to actual cancer but they cut it out so hopefully we took care of it. Of course with the advent of a procedure that burns out 1/5 of my cervix I was sort of out of commission... and a little depressed. I wasn't allowed to work out for two weeks, didn't actually work out for 3. And then of course, I'd eat my feelings. Not to mention since I work for a beer company I drink a lot. So my weight went up a tad. I'm not proud of it.

My clothes still fit. I still wear a 10. Just not looking as good as I used to when we started this business and I didn't take it seriously. So today I took my measurements (as recommended by rockstar Natalie) and weighed myself for the first time in months. Ugh. It's gross, really.

So here they are (I only did 5):
Arm: 12 inches
Thigh: 25 inches
Waist: 34 inches
Hip: 43 inches
Bust: 42 inches
Weight: 182.5

Wish me luck as I actually start to take this seriously. I need to catch up with Natalie!! :)

Weigh Day ...

Well, here we are - hoping to find ourselves another pound closer to our goal!

I weighed in at 169 today. But, I will not judge this week until I see next week's number. :-) I have added strength training to my routine and have been doing A LOT of muscle work this week.

Today was also Measurement Day for the month ... which is why I'm not too bummed about not losing any weight this week.

My Measurements:
Waist: 31.5 ... overall decrease of 8.5 inches
Hips: 42.5 ... overall decrease of 4.75
Thigh: 22 ... overall decrease of 6.5 inches
Calf: 15.5 ... overall decrease of 1.75
Upper Arm: 13 ... overall decrease of 2.5 inches
Push ups: TBD
Crunches: TBD

Last Month:
Waist: 33 inches

Tomorrow is Measurement Day!

I have read a lot about why weight can be a misleading number. Turning fat into muscle can actually make you gain weight, right? Sure. But I still use my scale weekly and will continue to do so because when you start out weighing 195 pounds, you really do need to look at that number! I didn't want to turn all of my fat into muscle, I want it gone!

However, as we work to gain muscle and lose fat it can make a difference from one week to the next ... especially since our goal is to lose a pound each week.

So, besides tracking my weight, I measure myself with a tape measure each month. Tomorrow happens to be that day! Feel free to join me and write down your numbers.

Here is what I will be measuring:
Waist: I measure at my belly button so I can be consistent and leave my tummy relaxed (no sucking in!)
Hips: I measure at the roundest part of my butt.
Upper Arm: I measure right at the middle between my elbow and shoulder
Calf: The largest part
Thigh: Pick one, and measure the roundest part
Push ups: Do as many as you can in one minute; for a woman ages 20-29 doing 34-48 modified push ups is "good" any more is "excellent"
Crunches: Do as many as you can in one minute; for a woman younger than 35 doing 40 is "good" and 50 is "excellent"

Tape measures only cost a couple of dollars and can be purchased at a craft/sewing store. Sparkpeople.com has one you can print out, but I'd be afraid of paper cuts!

Hips: 45.5 inches
Thigh: 27 inches
Upper Arm: 14 inches
Calf: 16.5 inches

Progress in some areas, no change in others. But hey, I'll take it!

With softball over, my exercise level has dropped. Now that my big paper is finished, I'd like to say I can put more time to working out, but finals are right around the corner. Here's hoping once my finals are over I can really hit it hard and carry that into the new semester.

Waist: 37.5 inches (still not sucking in)
Hips: 46 inches (I've been playing catcher - lots of squatting)
Thigh: 28.5 inches (see above regarding the catcher gig)
Upper Arm: 14 inches
Calf: 16.5 inches (a real target area for me ... I HATE my killer calves!)

Weight: 195 lbs (sigh)
Waist: 40 inches (not sucking in)
Hips: 47.25 inches (junk in the trunk, much?)
Thigh: 28.5 inches
