In search of motivation

When you embark on a weight-loss journey, there are two ways to go about it: 1) eat fewer calories and 2) burn extra calories. Often, people mix these two, but not always. In fact, studies have shown that working out isn't nearly as important as watching your food intake when you want to drop pounds.

When I started on the 50n50 path, I opted not to add exercise until I weighed less than 175 pounds. Because I have had bad knees most of my life, I didn't want to mess them up more by putting pressure on them. It was a good decision.

Enter the 3-Day training when I walked all over Kansas City - almost literally - and loved it, followed by training for my first 5k.  Then, I hit my goal weight and shifted my attention to maintenence for a couple of months and that was that.

Now I want to get back into losing weight and it is proving more difficult than I thought. I'm practicing most of the good habits I learned while losing 50 pounds - except one.

I don't exercise.

I hope it's just the weather that is causing this - maintenance began just as winter hit and it's been a doozy - but for some reason, I think there is more to blame.

This is a dark, dirty secret I have been hiding for a couple of months now and I'm ashamed of it. I ashamed that after all this time, I still can't get over how much I dislike physical activity. When it comes to exercise, I just can't seem to get over the hurdle of pain. I know it's going to hurt and I don't wanna feel it. I know I'm going to sweat, and I hate that sticky, icky feeling.

I have all the resources I need - access to the gym at school and a Groupon membership (30 visits in 90 days) to the Golds Gym in my 'hood. But I haven't activated either this year.

I'm supposed to be running a half marathon in SIX WEEKS. So, it's time to get my ass in gear, seriously. Realisitically, there is no way I'll be able to run the entire thing, but there is no reason I should walk to whole thing either.

My 3-Day training and 5k training came with motivation - curing cancer, but the half marathon isn't cause related. I need to find that spark. For some reason, it's easier for me to get off my butt for a cause like breast cancer, but not for my own sake.

This, my ladies, is one question to which I don't have the answer. But, I'm no longer full of excuses ... At least I'm heading in the right direction. I just gotta make sure I pick up the pace.

Miles to go

I have run smack-dab into a weight loss wall and don't quite know how to get around it. Yes, Ladies (and Gentleman), I have hit that dreaded plateau.

I weighed in at 157 again. Sure, back when I weighed in at 162 two weeks in a row, I had a false alarm. But the past four weeks have seen me at 156, 159, 157, and 157.

Talking with Lindsy about the plateau this morning, she asked a simple question.

"So, what are you going to do - exercise more or eat less?"

And it really is that simple. I love it.

Goal Weight Day is in 6 weeks and I need to lose 12 pounds (still!) to make Goal Weight. Of course, that means 2 pounds a week, but I've decided not to make any specific changes until after the 3-Day.

By default, I suppose that means I'm going to "exercise more" since my 3-Day training has me walking 18 miles this Saturday and 15 miles this Sunday. Plus it has me walking 60 miles over three days in a little more than two weeks. Right now, I feel the need to focus all of my energy on getting ready for the 3-Day. I'll eat healthy and follow my training regimen and reassess once the walk is over.

On a positive note, my monthly measurements provided some joy this morning. My waist is in the 20s and my hips in the 30s!!! My thighs and arms didn't change in numbers, but the definition is noticeably more pronounced in both areas. Also, my calves are (annoyingly) slowly getting smaller.

Sure, my weight itself may be frustrating me right now, but I have never felt so healthy! That's where the real success lies.

This past Sunday Kevin agreed to sub on a mens softball team and I went to cheer him on. I was approached by a stranger from a different league who needed another girl so they could play. A couple of years ago I would have declined, but instead I jumped up and joined the Pile of Hits.

During the next two hours, I squatted as catcher (and still feel the pain!), hit the ball two out of three at-bats (got walked on the 4th) and narrowly missed getting on base by milliseconds. Last year, I missed getting on base by full seconds - my hits are going farther and I'm running faster, now. Also, I have a new idea about my abilities and I love it!

It would be easy to stop now. To congratulate myself on losing 40 pounds (or so), getting in better shape and bragging about my status as a long-distance walker. I don't even think there would be too much shame in it. I've come a long way, baby. But I promised to lose 50 pounds in 50 weeks and I'm not going to walk away from that goal. So sure, I've come a long way - but I still have miles to go (12 to be exact) before I get there.

My Measurements:
Waist: 29.5 ... overall decrease of 10.5 inches (WOOHOO!!!)
Hips: 39.75 ... overall decrease of 7.5
Thigh: 21 ... overall decrease of 7.5 - no change, though, from last month
Calves: 15 ... overall decrease of 2.25 inches (slowly, but surely, right?)
Upper Arm: 12.5 ... overall decrease of 3 inches - no change from last month
Push ups: 20 (Though Kevin says they don't count since I didn't go down "far enough" hmph)
Sit ups: 27 (I did full sit-ups rather than crunches this morning)

Last Month's Measurements
Waist: 30.5
Hips: 40
Thigh: 21
Calves: 15.25
Upper Arm: 12.5

Starting Points:
Weight: 195 lbs
Waist: 40 inches
Hips: 47.25 inches
Thigh: 28.5 inches
Upper Arm: 15.5 inches
Calf: 17.25 inches
Push ups: 4
Crunches: 15

Lessons at the half-way mark

If someone was to join us today, what would you tell them about tricks to success?

I've thought of ten things:
1. Set attainable, realistic goals
2. Take a before picture.
3. Buy a scale.
4. Gather a team of supporters
5. Be ready to be different
6. Track your calories.
7. Eat breakfast. Every day.
8. Don't make drastic changes.
9. Drink water. Lots of water.
10. Don't use food as a reward for "good behavior."

1. Set attainable, realistic goals:
Crazy workout plans and crash diets just don't garner garner success. Most times, when you are making drastic changes in your life, it is best to make them gradually. If your goal is to be healthier, then weight loss will be a side effect of that. But when your only goal is to lose a lot of weight, you aren't making life changes that will be permanent.

Setting small-term goals along your ultimate path will yield major motivation as you go along. Maybe it's fitting into your skinny jeans or being able to wear shorts without constantly tugging down the inseam. Maybe it's being able to run a 5k or just walk a mile. It doesn't matter. When you see yourself hit each goal, you feel invincible.

2. Take a before picture.
I wish I had done this. Instead, I took my "before" after losing 20 pounds. It's hard for me to see the changes in my body and I still see "Fatalie" when I look in the mirror. I wish I had a way to spot the changes at a glance.

3. Buy a scale.
When I was scale-less for a month, I floundered, lost, with no idea how I was doing. It's important not to become obsessed with the scale, but if you are trying to lose weight, there really is no other way to track it. You have to weigh yourself! Everything I've read says to do this routinely, but not obsessively. I weigh myself once a week because my plan is to lose a pound each week.

There was a long time in my life when I argued scales were monsters. I refused to weigh myself unless I was at the doctor. For years I didn't know how much I weighed. Which means I didn't know just how overweight I truly was. The scale isn't the enemy! When treated right, a scale is your teammate and will help you stay on track.

4. Gather a team of supporters.
Whether it's a blog group like 50n50 or something like Sparkpeople, Weight Watchers, or a church group, having supporters, cheerleaders and competitors is very important. Accountability is important and a network like the Ladies in Weighting provides that. When I don't lose my pound each week, I feel like I let my girls down and I work extra hard the next week to make up for it.

5. Be ready to be different.
This has been really hard for me. I was ready to be skinny and ready to be healthy, but I honestly wasn't ready to lose weight. For one thing, my mental image of myself isn't changing as it should. That holds me back at times when motivation is hard to find.

Also, bluntly put, losing weight isn't cheap. I'm not talking about buying low fat (often a trap, so be careful!), but losing weight means your clothes don't fit and that means you have to shop for more. Sure, you can thrift-store it, but is someone else's stretched out clothes really a good guide for your new size?

6. Track your calories.
This is the thing that annoys most people - mainly because it is a drastic change to your routine. But it truly is key! They average person burns 10 times their weight in calories (their RMR). If you weigh 200 pounds, you are probably burning 2000 a day (more if you're active!). To lose one pound, you need to burn 3500 calories. In order to do this in a week without adding exercise to your day, you need to limit calorie consumption to 1500 calories. The only way to know if you are doing this is to track those calories!

Working out doesn't mean you can skip this either.Working out increases your appetite and makes you think it's ok to eat more because you "worked it off." But if you aren't tracking, how do you know you aren't eating too much more?

Also, as you lose weight, your RMR lessens. You burn fewer calories in a day. This means your daily allotment decreases as you lose weight and you need to track as you lessen what you're allowed. Of course, as this happens you need to increase your exercise, I honestly just can't stress how important it is to know what you take in and what you are burning in order to plan your meals.

7. Eat breakfast. Every day.
I actually credit breakfast as the reason I lost the first 10-15 pounds. Eating breakfast every day was the most major change I made in my life. I honestly rarely ate breakfast on weekdays. Coffee was all I had until I was ravenous at lunchtime. Basically, skipping that meal was starving my body. When I finally did feed it, my body hoarded all the calories, preparing itself for the next famine.

Nowadays, I make myself a pretty big breakfast of scrambled eggs with bacon bits and oatmeal or cereal. I average 240 calories, but am not starving at all when lunch rolls around. I don't engorge myself on bad things at lunch, and I'm generally more energized for the day.

8. Plan each meal.
Because I eat a significant breakfast and am faced with a limited budget and really bad food choices for lunch I find that packing my lunch each evening helps me plan the day. I put the foods into my calorie tracker on Sparkpeople.com and use the remaining calories form my daily budget to plan a suitable dinner. THEN, I use leftovers from that dinner for the next day's lunch (usually more than the amount I ate for dinner because lunch should actually be a more substantial meal than dinner - I know, mind-blowing - because we use the calories to finish out our day).

9. Drink water. Lots of water.
I hate water. But, I have noticed that when I consistently drink 8 glasses of water a day, I consistently lose weight. As much as it pains me to say this, drinking water is very important in all of this.

10. Don't use food as a reward for "good behavior."
Rewards are important. Just don't let them derail you! Just this week, I almost did it. I wanted a doughnut badly, so I almost let myself have one as a reward for losing 5 pounds in one week. Luckily, reason prevailed. I don't advocate depriving yourself of life's pleasures. If you want a doughnut, go get yourself a doughnut (deprivation will just make you bitter!). But make sure you put it in your calorie tracker and adjust your other meals accordingly.

Instead of using that doughnut as a reward, however, go buy a new shirt! Or get a pedicure! Buy yourself a yoga mat or something fun that will also add to your healthy habits. Sure food feels good in the moment, but that reward will only make you feel bad later - and derail the success you're celebrating. You should feel proud following a milestone, not guilty.

What do y'all think?

When I was at the gym last Friday, I popped over to the scale following my workout and checked the numbers.

Fully clothed, in the middle of the afternoon, I came in at 178.

Usually, Weigh Day involves me waking up, going to the bathroom, getting completely naked and then stepping on the scale.

Following Wednesday's workout, I did the same thing and weighed in at 177.

Today, I popped on the scale, again fully-clothed and following my workout, and checked the numbers: 176!

Since I am sure my clothes weigh a pound do I get to claim that I've lost 20 pounds???? I'll let you decide ...

Moving pains

Oh. My. Word.

I am so exhausted I can't even tell you ...

I moved this weekend and it was one of the longest moves ever. I have no idea how I accumulated that much stuff living in an attic, but apparently, I did.

I pushed my muscles to their breaking points and am just now feeling the kinks go away.

I ate horribly - ordered pizza, Chinese and cooked up bacon and mac n cheese. But I'm fairly confident I worked it off.

Since I don't have access to a scale, however, I won't know for a bit.

Second step was a doozy

I almost didn't do it.

Honestly, I didn't think I would be able to make it.

It was quite a day for defining commitment.

But I did it.

I went to the gym.

It was a crazy, hectic day full of places to be and things to do at certain times. I knew I wouldn't be able to fit in the three miles I was supposed to walk today (it takes 45 minutes at least!).

But, I decided some was better than none and I went to the gym between stuff and managed to get a bit more than half of my distance.

Why do I call this a day to define commitment? Well, this is technically the second day of Week 1 in my training plan. The gym isn't yet part of my routine and it hasn't quite become routine. Not going to the gym would have been easy.

But I went ... Today's mini work out was definitely a thousand steps in the right direction!

Somedays I just can't.

I haven't worked out for 5 days. Which is abnormal.

After my doctor's appointment two weeks ago I had to go back for a second round procedure this past Friday. One that had some physical reprocussions that caused me to spend the entire weekend lying down on the couch taking it easy. At one point I thought I felt better. Enough to clean, do laundry, play with the dog. But then I pushed it too far and had to lie down again. Ugh.

I won't get the results of the second test until Friday. But I think I'll go back to working out tomorrow. I was having some knee issues last week anyway, so in retrospect I guess it was good that I took a few days off. They are feeling much better.

I just wish I did. Ugh.

Dinner depression dilemma

So, as is my habit these days, I was checking out my dietary patterns and have noticed something peculiar.

As alluded in a previous post, I am not eating very many carbs - and this is not intentional. I love carbs! This needs to be fixed, but I want to do it right.

I love dinner. I cook it myself just about every night and love sitting down with someone to enjoy a good meal. However, I'm thinking this is a problem.

In order to "save" calories for my lovely dinners (they only average 600 calories, including dessert and/or alcoholic beverage), I only eat about 150 calories for breakfast and 400 for lunch.

Take today's menus, for example:

I started the day with egg whites, turkey ham and Laughing Cow cheese: 148 calories, 1 carb, 6 fat grams, 22 protein grams.

Lunch is 3 ounces of turkey ham, a half-inch slice of fresh pineapple and celery: 137 calories, 13 carbs, 5 fat grams, 15 protein grams. This is, admittedly, a lighter lunch than usual (grocery issues ... no bread in the house), but at the same time, it isn't that far off.

Add a couple slices of bread and you'll have what I would normally eat. (Adding bread will make the meals stats: 393 calories, 60 carbs, 10 fat grams, 22 protein grams.)

Now that I am adding an afternoon workout, I wonder if this will work. Carbs provide the energy needed for an adequate workout. Today, sans bread, is clearly a day of missing carbs. However, should I take a meal like this and use it as dinner instead? I usually eat at 7 p.m. and really have no need for carbs that late in the days. Should I eat a larger lunch and a lighter dinner? Something in me thinks I should!

Usually, I use leftovers from dinner for lunch. However, my thought is to eat the "left over" amount for dinner and save more for lunch.

I'll be honest, that really bums me out. Lunch is usually spent at my desk in the library, alone, with headsets in to listen to music while studying (or blogging).

I still enjoy food and have had a blast learning new ways to cook that were delicious AND healthy. I LOVE sharing those new recipes with others and am saddened at the thought of cooking new foods for myself alone.

Can someone offer a solution that will make it so I can still enjoy my dinners with others?

If the shoe fits ...

Ok, Ladies, tomorrow is the big day!

Training Day 1.

Yep, tomorrow I start training for the most athletic event of my life: the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure!

Since August 6 will find me stretching my muscles in Chicago, prepping to walk 60 miles in three days, tomorrow will find me starting the first workout of my 24-week training.

In order to be fully prepared for training (and limit the possible medical issues I may encounter), I visited a specialty store for runners this afternoon. For the first time in YEARS, I was fitted for a new pair of training shoes. The sales woman was a VERY pregnant former cross country coach who told me all about the issues I might encounter (including chafing on my boobs ... ouch). She also taught me things I never knew about the way running shoes should fit. It truly was fascinating.

Apparently, I have been buying the wrong size all along. Traditionally, I am a size 8.5. However, this means that I should buy size 9.5 in running shoes. Reasons: feet swell and you need more wiggle room for toes in running shoes.
Most of the shoes I tried were just too loose in the heel. I felt like my feet were flopping around, but there was a certain pair that fit almost perfectly. Toe room was great, width was perfect (apparently, I am an 8.5 wide - the idea of having fat feet is depressing), but the heel was just a tad too loose.

Then I was shown a trick ... using the last eyelet hole, make a loop of the shoe string to make a hole for lacing. Lace the string through that and it will tighten the fit on the heel. Kevin, who has run 4 marathons, didn't even know this trick, so I made a slide show to share.

Perfecto!

So, new shoes in hand, gym bag packed for a week of workouts (that way I can't say I forgot my clothes and skip a day), I am ready to start this newest challenge.

My wish list ...

So, it looks like I'm moving to a rent house all my own at the end of the month - and I couldn't be more excited!

It's a one bedroom - technically - but has a great bonus room that thrills me to no end. What should I do with it? Make is a game room for the boyfriend that is choosing not to live with me? Make it a play room for the animals that seriously need to keep their paws (and teeth!) off my stuff when I'm not home? Or make it a home gym?

To be completely honest, I will probably turn it into the playroom for my kids, BUT the bedroom is super big and I have grand plans of dedicating a section of it to a home gym.

To that end ... I have a wish list (and a birthday coming up ... hint, hint!)

1. Yoga mat
2. Swiss ball
3. Dumbbells - 2-5 lbs.
4. Nintendo Wii with Wii Fit
5. Subscription to Womens Health (I'm going to set this up once I get moved - smiley face)
6. Gym bag
7. iPod charger (can't find mine!)
8. iPod speakers
9. Full-length Mirror (2)
10. Jump Rope (I might actually have one of these packed away ... hmmm)

No, I'm not angling for birthday gifts ... I'm really just documenting a plan I have for my new house :-) Hold me accountable, Ladies!

Not Counting.

Natalie's post was about counting calories. Whelp, that works for some people. But when I used to do that it drove me nuts. I became obsessive compulsive about it. Everything I did was about how many calories and although I lost a lot of weight, I was incredibly unhappy. So I started working out instead and worrying less about how many calories a saltine had.

Working out, I've discovered, has helped me learn that I can eat whatever I want... as long as I run. So I run. A lot.

Yesterday I did 6 miles. Today, probably 3. Take a day off tomorrow. Thursday 3, Friday some cross training and then Saturday: 8 miles.

Of course, upping mileage is also about marathon training but it is amazing how your body changes when you have a consistent workout. Crawling into bed at night sans clothes and having your boyfriend say things to you like, "Wow you look amazing..." Well, that's enough for me. I do try and eat a little less. All things in moderation. But if I really want something, I have it.

I haven't been weighing in every week because weighing in can be a wee bit decieving the first few weeks of running. Your leg muscles are building up and although you are losing fat, you are gaining muscle weight.

All I know is that my six miles yesterday felt better than anything I've done in a long time (burning nearly 750 calories). So I had a piece of Oreo cheesecake last night.

Calories be damned.

Bollywood or bust?

So, following my new discovery (Exercise TV) I went looking for a quick workout this morning while Kevin played some video game up in my room.

I chose Bollywood Burn, a fifteen-minute routine to awesome music, very Slumlord Millionaire but without the child labor.

Basically, it is a version of cardio yoga. A lot of jumping up an down and stretching all at once. It was tons of fun, but the jumping sounds reached Curious Kevin and he came down to see what I was doing - spoiling my fun and causing me to run to the couch to preserve my pride.

I will definitely be trying it again, but have found a negative ... some of the positions it made me do were a bit foreign to my body. I'm feeling it in my joints (not the pleasant burn I love in my muscles). I can handle yoga so I know it's not just me being out of shape, this was just a bit hard on the hips and pelvic area. Next time, I will adjust a bit to make the positions feel more natural.

Things should work out just fine

I've been talking for weeks about finding a way to get exercise into my daily routine. I'm busy and it's going to be tough, but for the next 18 days, I am out of school and can make a pretty significant dent on my body.

I was going to start back on the Couch to 5k routine (LOVE IT!), but fear that will have to wait since there is at least a foot of snow on all the sidewalks and lawns.

So, I have had to go back to the drawing board, but have found the solution!

EXERCISE TV!!!

This is an entire channel dedicated to workout routines at your fingertips any time you want them! BRING IT ON!!!

There is a corresponding Web site
(with videos for those who don't have the on demand channel) that has a lot of routines and plans to follow. I can't decide if I should do the Dorm Room Diva, Busy Businessman or Corporate Climber ...

Updates...

I ran three times this week, three miles each time...that's a total of 9 miles! That's a long way to run. Grace came with me and loved every minute of it. I didn't reward myself with a huge bowl of ice cream like I really wanted to...I had a small bowl (teeny tiny) of ice cream and rewarded Grace with a huge portion of canned dog food which is a big treat for her (and I love it because I get to spoil my baby). I think I'm going to try to work some hiking in this weekend. Has anybody tried The Biggest Loser workouts? They are pretty awesome...a major workout and everybody has a little junk in the trunk so you don't feel so bad about your own junk. Have a great weekend!

Exercise, smexercise

As part of this endeavor, it is clear to me that more exercise must be added to my life.

A year ago, I lost 20 pounds in 2 months. How? I started running 20 miles every other day!

But I hate it when exercise becomes a chore.

So, in an effort to burn more calories without feeling like I have to exercise, I am adding new activities throughout the week.

Yesterday was self-defense class. My friend Abby (she is a member of the 50n50 FB group) and I went out to Kaufmann Stadium (where the Royals play) and learned to protect our assets. In all honesty, I don't think it burned too many calories, but it was nice to get out on Saturday morning and do something I wouldn't normally do.

After the class, we went back to Abby's and really got an upper body workout! We demolished her old 1970's tiny-tile backsplash!

We got about 2/3 of the way through it all when it was time for me to get home and check on the dogs. Today, we will finish the rest and put up a new backsplash. Abby isn't quite sure what she wants to do yet, but I am excited, nonetheless!!!
